Reflection, Thursday, February 18

Today we viewed the first portion of the 1999 film version of The Winslow Boy. (I still highly recommend the 1948 version, but it has been taken down from youtube.)

Please write your reflection on what we watched today here. (Remember that reflective writing is meant to go beyond summary and that these posts are meant to represent ten minutes of thinking and writing.)

Please remember also that by tomorrow (the original deadline was today) ALL students are meant to have a full "picture scene" script written and are meant to be "off-book" on lines from this "picture scene". We need to have these to work on tomorrow, so if you need to put in extra work tonight, please do it.

Please also remember that on Monday we will be having a quiz on The Winslow Boy. In preparation for this quiz, please be sure to watch the remainder of this film thoughtfully. Consider how you would summarize the story to one who was unfamiliar with it. Consider how you would describe the characters. Consider how you would produce the play if you were a director. Consider which of the roles might be challenging and how. Consider how, as an audience, we understand the relationships between these characters based on the script but also on other dramatic elements.

  1. Today we first discussed how the reflections are graded for around 20 minutes and in the rest of the time we watched the movie ''The Winslow Boy'' but we didn't finish it. I think that after we've watched the whole movie we will do better in our scenes and it will be clearer to us what is happening in them.

Today in class we started of with discussing reflections and how they are graded and that its very important that we do them to date and it will also help us in our exams. We then talked about what we were doing for this double lesson which was to watch 'The Winslow Boy'. And then Sir informed us that the script scenes are due tomorrow and that we have to be off script on them which is very important so that we can see where we stand. Some of us might need to add more to the script and work on it a bit more.
After all of this we started to watch 'The Winslow Boy'. I actually really like the movie so far and its really interesting. It was quite funny because during the movie, some of our line of different characters were said and many could actually finish of the lines and even say them before they were actually said which was pretty cool. They movie is really good so far and I cant wait to finish it! I like how they changed it a bit with everything. But I think they left a few things out which could have been funny to have in the movie. Like for example, they left out Dickie's line where he corrects Arthur, because Arthur calls the dance the 'bunny hop' or something like it.
Tomorrow we need to bring in our laptops or a USB to get the movie on it so that we can watch it at home and really pay close attention because we have a quiz (test) on 'The Winslow Boy' in class on Monday.
Im looking forward to finish the movie to see what happens. But I already have an idea of whats going to happen.

  3. Today we spent our class time discussing- once again- the importance of reflection and how it effects our grade and the over all importance of the posses of recalling the days progress so that in the exam we can easily remember the evaluations made whilst developing the pieces.

We watched The Winslow boy for the rest of the lesson, so that we could gain a general understanding of the story line and so that we could start to understand the characters individually, so that our own interpretations and develops can originate from the already portrayed and clearly understood existing characters.

By watching the movie it also allows us to understand the style and the feed of line deliverance, because the movie is not directly played out like our script, it allows us to see the possibility of interpretation.
Seeing the costumes also allows us to understand the time period that it is intend to be set in. And from that we can start to understand the posturing and gesturing of each of the characters.

Todays time was spent well, i think watching the movie is a very important contribution to development and understanding. As well as it aloud the class to relax and enjoy the possibility of preforming the piece themselves. Cant wait to finish the movie and get started on our interpretations of the story.

  5. Today first of all we discussed the reflections that are important for us as Mr Maclachlan mentioned that it does pull our grades. And that is the only thing that for now we are getting graded on.
When we finished taking Mr Maclachlan gave us a littile description of a movie the Winslow Boys. I was really looking forward to watch it as I thought this would help us to act it later on.

However sir told us that the older one is better than the one we watched today but I still liked it because it was colourful and especially what I liked about the movie is that we could properly see our carachters and the way the act.

I am a mother and I really liked the way she played in the movie and it gave me a lot of ideas of how I should play it.

Today unfortunetely I was feeling very sick, and sometimes I was closing my eyes so I could rest but not because the movie was boring, and so I missed some parts of the movie but I basically catched all the important information for our individual rolles.

I think giving us to watch a movie was very good of Mr M because it gave us a chance and an idea of how to act it.

Thank you for showing us a film and for a good class!

    xxx

  6. Today we discussed relevance of producing reflections on the blog. It is important because it can effect our grade tremendously and also helps for the exam at the end of the year because we can refer to our thoughts we have written on the blog.

We then watched the Winslow boy. i really enjoyed watching it since it really helped me understand how the lines are delivered between characters. i was able to compare my interpretation of my lines with the way the actor of Dickie. i realized i played my character a lot more angry with Arthur than the person who played Dickie. It made me decide how i want to deliver my lines, and what actions i can use.

We were also able to see the types of costumes the characters used, which helped us relate it to the time the play is set in.

Watching the film in class guaranteed most people saw it and could relate their character to it. i think people are more aware of how they will portray their character now, and it will be easier now! i'm looking forward to watching the rest of the film, and seeing how people will act out their characters. :D

  7. In todays lesson, we had a double lesson. At the beginning of class we discussed how important doing reflection is for our grades. We also discussed how they will help us prepare for our exam in a way because for our exam we will have to do a lot of writing.

After discussing that we started to talk about what we were going to do in the lesson. We were supposed to work on our picture scenes and be off book with them but we changed the plans a bit and started watching the Winslow Boy movie.

The movie so far, i think, is quite good. However I think that the actor playing Catherine isn't very good. It seems like shes just like saying the lines and not really putting any emotion in them. I dont know if its supposed to be that way or not but I just don;t think shes that good. But other than that I'm really excited to watch the rest of the movie. I really want to see what happens to Ronnie and what he was doing in those other 25 minutes. I've been starting to already learn my lines for Arthur and at some parts when he was speaking I was able to say the lines with him or before he said anything, but a lt of it got changed up. They left out a lot of things from our scene as well. For example they didn't have in the beginning where Violet sees Ronnie before anyone and they didnt have it when Arthur and John were talking and Arthur called Violet to tell him to stop playing is gamophone. I kinda wish they did at that stuff to make it more humorous but I guess that wasnt really what they were focusing on in the movie. They seem less focused on Dickie and his studies than they do in our scene.

We werent able to finish the whole movie in class. We have like 40 minutes left so he wants us to either bring in a USB or our computers for us to put it on so we can watch it on our own. We have a quiz on it on Monday so we really need to watch it to get an idea of everything.

I think that its good too watch the movie to help us give us ideas to act it out and how you can make your character act. It also helps us get an idea of a setting and props to use and uniforms because as we actually get to acting it all out, we need to focus on those things because thats what we will need to know for our exam.
    See ya tomorrow :)

  8. Today we started off by discussing the reflections as they will affect our overall grade. We also discussed how it will be marked and how they will bring up our grades by simply doing the reflections.

The rest of the lesson we watched the Winslow Boy. The play is different from our script but the story is still the same. It gives us a general idea of how the characters are feeling and what is going on.

The way the boy played Ronnie was how I had pictured Ronnie to be. He is very defensive and does not want to dissapoint his father, he's affraid of him. Although the film was different and left out the first bit with Violet and Ronnie, it doesn't really affect me because I know I won't be playing that part.

The movie gave us all the idea of what we want to do with our characters and gave us more of an idea of the time. It helped me in seeing what to do with Ronnie.

Even if the movie is quite a bit different from the script we were given, it is still the same idea and most parts are the same. It gives an idea of how the characters will react with each other and how they speak to one another. This will help everyone especially me prepare for the exam.

Sir i am so sorry that i couldnt post my blog on thursday but i can explain in class. i really hope it wont affect my grade...

Today in our double period we watched the first part of the winslow boy. Basically the plot is about a boy who has been kicked out of osbourne naval college for stealing. when he returns home two days early he is first afraid of his father but as soon as the father, ather is convinced that his son, Ronnie is innocent, he does all in his power to prove him innocent. Catherine, the daughter is kind of a suffragette and most men would not wish to marry her but John Watherstone does. so they are a happy couple. the older son Dickie is lazy and does not do so well in school and this arther doesnt like. Grace is the wife and Violet is the housekeeper. the winslow family are relatively rich and live in a nice house.
Now all of this is the same as in our play pretty much but as we are doing only the first scene, the film has much more detail and information.
Although i didnt find the acting very good i thought that they managed to convey the storyline the way i had imagined it. the costumes were good and everyone looked pretty much how i had pictured them in my head, except for Ronnie. I thought he would be more innocent-looking. I though he would be a brunette but what i mean is that i thought that i found it evident that the actor was acting which to me made him seem guilty as if he was lying.
I am playing Catherine and her personality was quite different from what i had expected. i think i will play her in a different way, as a kinder and more caring person. thats another thing i noticed in the film, that the family was rather cold and unloving, which came as a shock.
i compared my lines to catherines and in my head i was saying them in a different way and i dont think i am going to change them much, although i liked getting a different 'point of view' or interpretation. i definitely feel that i know the characters more thoroughly now and seeing more of the film helps me analyse my character deeper because i can see how she reacts to other situtations, helping me get more into character.
i like our part of the play more because i had a completely different interpretation of it than that of the film and mine was warmer and more understanding and well nicer, in my opinion.
the last part of the movie that we saw in class was when grace and arther were talking about the situation and how they didnt have enough money to keep Violet, and they have a bit of an argument.
i am interested to see what happens in the rest of the film and i hope it has a happy ending. the order was also different from the play but that was expected since film interpretations of a play have to change in one way or another.
i definitely think that seeing the movie will help us with our performance because we will know the characters better and already have an idea of what the scenery and everything could be like. :D
